RISO, halftone, and duotone are often grouped together because all three can turn a photograph into a more graphic image. They are not interchangeable.

  • RISO style describes a broader print character built from spot inks, screened tones, paper texture, and imperfect registration.
  • Halftone describes a method of representing tone with dots.
  • Duotone describes an image built from two color channels or inks.

One image can use all three at once: a two-ink palette can form a duotone, halftone dots can carry its light and dark values, and paper grain plus misregistration can give it a RISO-style finish.

What is a RISO-style effect?

In digital image making, “RISO style” usually refers to visual cues associated with spot-ink printing. Color is limited to a small ink palette instead of being reproduced as ordinary full-color photography. Tonal areas become visible halftone dots. The paper remains part of the image, and small registration offsets can reveal colored fringes where ink impressions do not align perfectly.

That makes RISO style a combination of decisions rather than one filter:

  1. Which spot inks carry the image?
  2. How large and dense are the halftone dots?
  3. How much paper grain shows through?
  4. How far are the ink impressions offset?
  5. How are the photo and type arranged on the sheet?

What is a halftone?

A halftone is a way to represent continuous light and dark values with a pattern of dots. Darker areas use greater dot coverage; lighter areas leave more paper visible. Viewed from a distance, the dots blend into tones. Viewed up close, the screen becomes visible.

Halftone does not define the palette. The dots can be black, one spot color, two colors, or part of a larger print treatment. A black newspaper-like image and a colorful RISO-style poster can both use halftone screening while looking completely different.

Choose a halftone-led look when the dot pattern itself is the main visual idea. Larger dots and a direct crop make the image feel more graphic; smaller dots preserve more photographic detail.

What is a duotone?

A duotone uses two colors to describe an image. One color often carries darker values while the other carries lighter or mid-tone areas, though the exact relationship depends on the treatment.

The defining feature is the two-color palette, not a specific dot shape, paper surface, or registration error. A duotone can be smooth and clean, with no visible print texture. It can also use halftone dots and textured paper.

This is why a two-ink RISO-style image is also duotone-like, but not every duotone looks like a RISO print. Without visible dots, paper grain, or registration character, the result may read as a clean color treatment rather than a physical print simulation.

Choose a duotone-led look when color reduction matters more than surface texture. It is useful for creating a consistent palette while keeping the photo recognizable.

The practical difference

The easiest way to separate the three terms is to ask what each one controls:

  • RISO style controls the overall print character. Spot inks, paper grain, halftone screening, and misregistration work together.
  • Halftone controls how tone is rendered. Dot size and coverage determine how the image moves between ink and paper.
  • Duotone controls how many colors carry the image. The palette is limited to two, whether the finish is smooth or visibly printed.

They answer different design questions. “Should this feel like an imperfect spot-ink print?” is a RISO-style question. “Should the dots be visible?” is a halftone question. “Should the image use exactly two colors?” is a duotone question.

Which effect should you choose?

Choose RISO style when the goal is a tactile, poster-like result. Use spot inks, visible dots, paper grain, and a measured amount of misregistration. Poster margins and short solid-ink type help the whole sheet feel designed.

Choose a halftone-led treatment when the screen pattern is the subject. Start with dot size and ink amount, then keep the palette and paper treatment restrained enough for the dots to stay readable.

Choose a duotone-led treatment when a strict two-color palette is the main requirement. Add halftone or paper character only if the image should also suggest a print process.

How to combine them in InkTone

  4. Balance the ink amount so highlights still reveal paper.
