How to Make a RISO-Style Photo Without Photoshop
Create a RISO-style photo in your browser with spot inks, halftone dots, paper grain, misregistration, poster type, and a composite PNG export.

A RISO-style photo does not need to begin with Photoshop layers. The visual language comes from a small set of print decisions: a limited spot-ink palette, visible halftone dots, textured paper, and slightly imperfect color registration.

What this workflow creates

1. Start with a photo that has a clear subject
An image with one readable subject is easier to translate into a limited-ink print. Strong light and dark areas give the halftone dots useful tonal structure, while some open space leaves room for paper and typography to become part of the composition.

2. Choose the RISO preset or a spot-ink set
Begin with the RISO preset when the goal is a recognizable spot-ink print. It establishes a useful starting point for the ink palette, dot character, paper texture, and registration offset.
The ink choice changes the whole image more than a small slider adjustment. A two-ink combination produces a more graphic result; a broader spot-ink set keeps more color relationships from the source photo. Judge the palette by whether the subject remains readable, not by whether it reproduces every original color.
3. Set the halftone dots before adding texture
Halftone dots translate continuous tones into printed coverage. Adjust Dot size until the dot pattern is visible at the scale where the image will be viewed. Smaller dots preserve more photographic detail. Larger dots make the screen itself part of the design.
Then adjust Ink amount. More ink gives shadows and color areas greater visual weight; less ink leaves more of the paper visible. If the subject starts to flatten into heavy blocks, reduce the ink amount or return to a smaller dot size.
The useful test is simple: step back from the preview. The image should still read as a photo, while the dots remain visible enough to establish the print character.
4. Add paper grain and controlled misregistration
Paper grain gives the light areas a fibrous, uncoated surface and lets the sheet participate in the image. Raise it until the paper is visible without overwhelming facial features, small objects, or type.
Misregistration offsets the spot-ink impression and creates colored fringes around edges. A small offset suggests a physical print process. A larger offset becomes a deliberate graphic effect. Use the subject's most important edge—a face, silhouette, or product outline—to decide when the separation is strong enough.
These controls work best in sequence: establish the ink and dots first, then add paper and registration. Otherwise, surface effects can distract from a weak tonal structure.
5. Turn the photo into a poster layout
A RISO-style image often becomes more convincing when the paper is treated as a designed sheet instead of a crop around the photo.
Choose the paper ratio, adjust the margin, and drag the image into position. Larger margins make the photograph feel like an editorial image or small print; tighter margins give it more visual force. InkTone keeps the photo's native proportions rather than stretching it to fill the sheet.
Add a short title, date, place name, or caption with the text controls. Keep the wording brief so the solid-ink type supports the image instead of turning the sheet into a text-heavy layout. 6. Compare the image, then export one PNG
Use the original and processed views to check what the effect has changed. Pay attention to three things:
- Is the subject still immediately recognizable?
- Are the dots visible without erasing important detail?
- Do the paper grain and misregistration support the image rather than competing with it?

- Set dot size.
- Balance ink amount.
- Add paper grain.
